Fox in a Box - Chicago takes a look at the top 10 Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ rules that escape room fans will truly appreciate.

  • Aborting a nuclear weapons launch and fending off Doomsday.

  • Planning and executing a bank robbery.

  • Escaping a serial killer.

  • Breaking out of prison.

Whichever mission you choose at Chicago's premier escape room, your escape game will feature one or both of two elements:

  • Solving a mystery of some kind (like finding out whether the serial killer really is the Zodiac).

  • Planning and executing an action of some sort (like escaping from the Prison).

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some of the tactics employed by Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs to solve crimes and stop disasters from occurring can certainly come in useful in the escape missions here at Fox in a Box - Chicago.

In other words, some of Gibbs’ rules will be highly appreciated and followed by escape artists and fans of Fox in a Box - Chicago escape room.

And today, we will reveal the top 10 Gibbs’ rules that we feel a Fox in a Box - Chicago fan will truly appreciate.

But first, a primer. Who is Leroy Jethro Gibbs and how did his rules come about?

Most of us revel in the spirit of Santa and bask in his warmth even though we know he’s not real, right?

It’s the same with Gibbs.

Leroy Jethro Gibbs is the Special Agent who leads a Major Case Response Team as part of the NCIS Washington, D.C. field office in the television series NCIS. Just like with Santa, a lot of us would like him to be real.

Over his years of serving in the Marine Corps and subsequently as an NCIS Special Agent, Gibbs has developed a set of rules which help keep him and his team on track in difficult situations.

Failure to remember or conform to the rules often would result in a smack to the back of the head, a recurring comic element in the series.

So, what are the top 10 Gibbs’ rules that Fox in a Box - Chicago fans will REALLY appreciate?

Rule no. 1: Never screw over your partner (Season 4, Episode 14 - Blowback)

Escape rooms are supposed to be team efforts.

In fact, escape rooms are often used by firms and businesses to host team building events to help employees bond as a team and build team spirit.

It makes sense that trying to pull a fast one on your team just to show yourself in a better light would not be good for the overall escape mission.

Rule no. 3: Never be unreachable (Season 3, Episode 13 – Deception)

Communication is a key element in a successful escape.

Don’t get so caught up in what you’re doing that you fail to communicate with your escape team.

Rule no. 8: Never take anything for granted (Season 3, Episode 10 - Probie)

There is always the chance of something in an escape room turning out to be a red herring.

Or of something having a use different from the way you view or use it in your everyday life.

Rule no. 10: Never get personally involved in a case (Season 7, Episode 21 - Obsession)

Replace ‘case’ with task or riddle and you’re done.

You may be unable to accomplish a task or unravel a riddle as completely as you would have liked but you have got the information you need to proceed.

In that case, don’t obsess over the particular task or riddle. Remember, the clock is always ticking down!

Rule no. 11: When the job is done, walk away (Season 6, Episode 24 – Semper Fidelis)

When your escape mission is done and you’ve been debriefed, walk away from Fox in a Box -Chicago to Lou Malnati's for a deep dish pizza or to Buddy Guy’s Legends for some jazz.

Rule no. 15: Always work as a team (Season 5, Episode 5 – Leap of Faith)

Like I keep telling people, Fox in a Box - Chicago is the ultimate team building activity. It’s obvious that if you want to win, you need to work as a team.

Rule no. 20: Always look under (Season 12, Episode 17 – The Artful Dodger)

You should always be very observant in an escape room.

Always remember that in an escape room,

  • Things are not always what they seem.

  • Things are not always where you expect them to be.

Rule no. 23: Never mess with a Marine’s coffee if you want to live (Season 2, Episode 9 – Forced Entry)

Please remember that here at Fox in a Box - Chicago, we may not allow you to participate if you arrive while ‘under the influence’.

If you want to invigorate yourself, drink coffee. It’s a pretty good stimulant.

It follows that you should not mess with a fellow escape team member’s coffee.

Rule no. 28: If you need help, ask! (Season 13, Episode 10 – Blood Brothers)

You are allowed a certain number of hints here at Fox in a Box - Chicago.

So, if you do get stuck, don't hesitate to ask for help! Don’t make it a ‘prestige’ thing and get bottled up at one point.

Rule no. 51: Sometimes, you’re wrong (Season 7, Episode 24 – Rule Fifty-One)

Sometimes, you ARE wrong. Your teammate may be right.

Take their help, finish the puzzle and move on!
